your engine has reaches an equilibrium in operating temperature where the heat it generates becomes equal to the heat it evacuates through radiator heat exchange and through simple radiation. Whether you let it cool down slowly or a little faster by opening your hood, your engine will reach that operating temperature only a few minutes after you restart your car and drive off...so it's quite pointless if you ask me. But hey, if it makes you sleep better at night, by all means, open your hood =) George
